Writing Your Own Physics Essay

When writing a personal statement, University of Chicago applicants may run into the infamous physics essay.  This is a very popular prompt that many people struggle with, and that admissions counselors love to use as a measuring stick for potential candidates.  Are you worried about your own physics essay?  Don’t be; we can help you with your application for undergraduate admission!

Here’s a common version of the prompt:

“Heisenberg claims that you cannot know both the position and momentum of an electron with total certainty.  Choose two other concepts that cannot be known simultaneously and discuss the implications.  Do not consider yourself limited to the field of physics.”

A Sample Essay On Physics

Heisenberg claimed, in his famous uncertainty principle, that it was impossible to measure both an electron’s position and momentum without altering them.  This same principle holds true in many areas of life; most notably, whenever a decision is made.

We make thousands of decisions every day.  Many of them are trivial—whether to eat cereal or oatmeal for breakfast—while some may have life-changing consequences, like the decision to have children.  The one thing that all of these decisions have in common, though, is that by making one choice, we eliminate all other possibilities.

Consider the breakfast question.  If I decide to have oatmeal today, I choose not to have cereal, fruit, pizza, or no breakfast at all.  I could add any of those things to my breakfast, but then I’m having oatmeal AND cereal (or fruit, or pizza).  And while I may have cereal tomorrow, I will never again have the chance to have cereal today.

The same is true of any decision.  By making a decision, I know one path and make all other paths of action permanently unknowable.
