Graduate School Personal Statement Sample

I am currently handling a degree BS in Mass Communication. As a graduate of this course, I have come to realize the value of mass media in each and every individual all across the globe. With this, I also realized how the world has frog-leaped from a mechanical to an electronic way of transmitting signals and languages, or simply information, to other people.

The next thing that intrigued me so much is the bigger context of mass communication in the modern era. Since today’s generation is surrounded by media from which social media has been added, information dissemination has never been this easy. There are good sides in using such kind of media but it is inevitable that there are downsides too. When we talk about media, there is now a long list added aside from radio and television. All of these concepts signal man’s ingenuity in the transfer of information from one point of the grid to another.

In my graduate school research, I plan to study the historical, political and moral foundations of media. Since the modernization also made us, even children, aware of what is happening around, I would like to set a point of comparison to each timeline, insofar as media and communication are concerned.

I have already done two types of research in my undergraduate school. The most compelling reasons why I conducted A is to understand the behavior of people in receiving information from various channels while B is because I have been curious about the effects of mass media to the morality of each individual. Conducting these researchers are some of the milestones in my academic life because they taught me the value of teamwork and high ethical standards. Such characteristics, is expected from a MassCom graduate like me, is a valuable tool I shall be bringing at XYZ University. I know that research in this field connotes high responsibility in handling delicate information, and as a responsible professional in this field, I plan to inspire my future colleagues with the proper ways to conduct business. In the long run, the learning from my graduate studies will be my stepping stones for a position of reform in the field of mass media.

7 Tips for Writing a Graduate School Personal Statement

  • Begin with an introduction: At this point, don’t force yourself for an attention-grabbing and compelling personal statement introduction. Just free write and let your thoughts flow. After all, it is your first attempt and draft. Don’t suffer from the writer’s block by thinking about a great introduction at first. Later, you can change it anyway when you become aware of the defining life moments and professional/academic accomplishments that led you to choose this path.
  • Articulate why you have chosen the career: This statement is one of the common things to write in the statement because the admissions or screening committee wanted to look for candidates with clear and genuine reasons for choosing the graduate course. You must prove with evidence that you have the interest in the advanced degree to achieve those goals or reasons for applying and looking to become accepted into the graduate program. You can describe professors, courses, service projects, research, shadowing experiences or internships that have helped shape your aspirations and motivations. Be aware when addressing controversial topics to demonstrate your field knowledge using a current issue or debate in the subject field. Avoid being religious or political when doing so.
  • Be clear and specific: Don’t use vague sentences or words telling you to aspire to become a business leader, but do it using a variety of occupations. You can make a convincing or believable statement by demonstrating your passion in the field. For example, cite your work experience in a business-consulting firm.
  • Customize your statement: Don’t submit the same essay across all applications. Instead, you must describe your reasons for choosing the specific program over other alternatives. You may also omit this information if writing a personal statement to schools requiring a supplemental essay on the topic. Nevertheless, creating a strong essay highlighting the things that led you to choose this program, not others.
  • Be sincere: You don’t need to write grandiose or be someone else that you’re not.  Just be yourself and be truthful. In your essay, write about any appealing or noteworthy features of the program that attracted you to the school or program; however, don’t overdo. The screening committee already knows their awards and accomplishments. Most applicants will also use such facts and statistics. Make use of space wisely by focusing on yourself.
  • Highlight your interests relating to the research: If you have identified some professors that have the same topic interests, you may want to mention about your desire of working with them. However, keep your options open while being specific. Don’t write that you’re interested in all the research subjects of the faculty. In addition, do not write about narrow interest areas. Otherwise, the committee might think you have lack of ability in collaborating with faculty members.
  • Describe your motivation to succeed: Schools want strong candidates, who will serve as ambassadors for the excellence of their programs. They want students who can contribute to their stellar reputation in the field as well as those that can become future leaders in their professional career or academic studies.  In your essay, you may write about collaborating with other people on the topic or describe your role or contribution.

There you have the top seven tips for writing the graduate school personal statement. Stand out from the rest by highlighting your passion and genuine interest in the field. Be sure to create multiple drafts and spend enough time revising and reviewing your essay. Finally, take the pressure off your shoulders. Just enjoy the entire writing process and be yourself. Don’t overthink but write and edit later.

Do You Need Much Effort in Securing Scholarships?

Without an action plan, the process of applying for scholarships is challenging, time-consuming and laborious. While it is true that applicants should devote effort and time to make their applications competitive, it will take less work than you would imagine. Here are the basic steps to take when applying for scholarships:

  • Make a research and weigh your options: Before diving in and spending time in many scholarships you will find, regardless it is an employer-based, private, federal or institutional scholarship and grants, research and have a full view of each.
  • Plan and write impressive scholarship essays: Write a carefully thought of essay for every application. Customize each of them and make sure to demonstrate your clear progression and undergraduate learning to highlight that you have a solid foundation in pursuing the scholarship.
  • Collect recommendation letters: This part is one of the most time-consuming aspects of applying for grants and scholarships. You need to select people from your professional, personal or academic backgrounds to write a letter of recommendation for you. Many schools also work with referees privately for the recommendations.
  • Check and update your application documents: The admissions panel requires and collects specific documents from candidates. Make sure they’re ready before applying to save time and meet deadlines. Some of the most common documents required are standardized test scores, a CV or a resume, financial history and undergraduate transcripts.
  • Follow instructions closely: Double-check everything that the scholarship or grant is asking, and see that you follow all the instructions, including submission guidelines and deadlines. Avoiding any mistakes will ensure that your application won’t be discarded.
